Guide 07 · Bags

Checking bag sizes and materials in cssbuy spreadsheet

A bag photographed on a model can look any size. This guide turns a listing into numbers you can test against your laptop, your water bottle and your commute, and adds a simple way to judge how much space a bag will take up in a parcel.

Turn a photo into three numbers

Look for width, height and depth in centimetres. If only one number is listed, note it and write "dimensions incomplete". Then measure the things you carry: a 14-inch laptop is roughly 32 by 22 centimetres, but measure your own, because sleeves and cases add bulk.

Match the bag to the job

CampusBooks, laptop, bottleDepth, zip quality wording, weight when empty
Weekend tripClothes, small itemsCapacity, closure type, strap comfort

Strap drop and carry style

Strap drop is the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. It decides whether a shoulder bag sits comfortably under your arm or digs in. If a listing gives it, record it. If it only shows a long strap length, you may need to estimate, so mark it uncertain. Crossbody use depends on adjustable length, and backpacks depend on strap width and padding, so read those details too.

Material wording and what it implies

  • Leather usually means structure and character, but also weight.
  • Canvas is lighter and more casual, and often easier to maintain.
  • Nylon tends to be light and weather-friendly for rainy-day commutes.
  • Coated fabrics may resist scuffs but check the care instructions.

Copy the seller's own words rather than interpreting them. If the lining or hardware is described, record that as well, because those are the parts that wear first.

Packed volume: a quick way to think about parcels

A structured bag keeps its shape and takes up real space in a parcel. A soft bag can often be folded. Multiply width by height by depth in centimetres to get a rough volume, then compare candidates by that figure. The calculation is only a guide: the final charge depends on the carrier's conditions, which the parcel weight and volume guide explains.

Check the empty weight. A heavy bag adds to your daily load and to the parcel. If the weight is not listed, mark it unknown.

Bag checklist

For each candidate

  1. Record width, height and depth in centimetres.
  2. Compare against your laptop or main item, with a margin.
  3. Write the strap drop or adjustable range if shown.
  4. Copy the material, lining and hardware wording.
  5. Note the closure type and compartments.
  6. Estimate packed volume and flag any missing weight.

Where to go next

When you open the bags category, bring this checklist with you. To verify photos, availability and after-sales terms before you commit, read product information to verify, and return to the cssbuy spreadsheet home page any time.
